What it names
Documentocracy operates by exploiting a structural property of apparatus-mediated knowledge production: whoever holds the visible apparatus tends to receive credit for what the apparatus demonstrates, even when the originating creative or empirical work was upstream of the apparatus.
The mode is theft-adjacent. It captures downstream value (credit, capital, prestige, market position) from upstream creative labor while maintaining a framing layer that protects the captor from accountability. Apparatus-holders genuinely contribute partial value through distribution rails, computation, intermediation, vocabulary, scale, or coordination; Documentocracy operates by inflating this partial contribution into apparent total production while obscuring the originating contribution.
How the mode was identified
Documentocracy emerged from attribution-correction during matrix construction. An originating insight (Sabbotarchy) was misattributed by the documentation apparatus that demonstrated it, in a way that made the originator invisible inside the apparatus. The pattern generalizes across multiple theft-adjacent schemes:
AI training on copyrighted material; academic citation chains that obscure originators; tech platforms capturing user-content monetization; music and streaming royalty compression; aggregator credit-capture from primary sources; journalism credit-capture from sources; open-source IP capture by employers; pharmaceutical patent capture from indigenous knowledge; domestic-labor value capture by households and platforms.

Why it intersects with Imperocracy
Documentocracy benefits from Imperocracy at scale. Where there is no enforceable check, originators have limited recourse against apparatus-holders capturing their work. Copyright enforcement requires functioning courts; labor protections require functioning regulatory agencies; academic-integrity norms require functioning institutional accountability. Imperocracy weakens all three. Documentocracy becomes operationally easier as Imperocracy strengthens.
The defense
Attribution discipline at the methodological layer. Distributed implementation does not require coordination, which makes it structurally easier to deploy than coordinated reform at other layers.
